Myrtilla Miner Elementary SchoolWashington, DCAwards: The historic portion of the original building remains on-site. The new school has been designed to harmonize with this rich architectural context, picking up on the arched entry and the brick detailing. The classroom bays are expressed on the facade thus relating to the rhythm of the rowhouses in the surrounding community. The plan is organized along a Main Street that connects through the block, allowing access from both sides of the site. All community-use rooms (cafeteria, gym) are easily accessible for night-time use. As the center of the academic space, the two-story media center connects to both floors and is day-lit from above. The classrooms and resource rooms are located along a short loop circulation that wraps around the media center. |
