Ebb Valley Elementary School is a new 67,000 s.f. school designed for 591 students in Pre-K through 5th grades. The building design evolved from existing site conditions of a constant slope of 10%. The solution that resulted in the least earthwork was a linear, 2-story building, located parallel to existing site contours.
The linear corridor allows for maximum supervision of the academic wing on each floor. Academic areas are separated from the public areas which can be closed off, limiting access to the building after school hours.
Most of the classrooms face north or south to maximize energy efficiency. South facing windows will have sunscreens to control direct sunlight. An operable wall between the cafeteria and gymnasium opens for larger assemblies. Classroom clusters and the cafeteria/gymnasium create individual building volumes with sloped roofs. The hill behind the gym is graded and landscaped to create an outdoor amphitheater for outdoor education and performances.
